Democratic Party to Intensify Communications with PKS


Jakarta, April 26 – The Democratic Party (PD) which has officially tipped Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as its presidential candidate will intensively communicate with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) which is ready to coalesce, a spokesman said.
“If PKS has expressed its readiness to coalesce, we will undertake the follow-up,” PD’s political affairs chairman, Anas Urbaningrum said here Sunday in a press conference after the closing ceremony of the party’s one-day national leadership meeting at Hall D, Jakarta Fair Complex in Kemayoran.
The opening and closing remarks of the party’s leadership meeting was made by PD chief patron Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is also the incumbent president.
PD’s leadership meeting has fully authorized Yudhoyono to pick up his choice to become his running mate before the registration period for presidential and vice presidential candidates on May 10 to 16, 2009.
The General Election Commission (KPU) has decided that the presidential race will be carried out on July 8, 2009.
In the meantime, PKS’s legislative board (Majlis Suro) in its meeting here Sunday decided to coalesce with the Democratic Party.
“Regarding the would-be vice presidential candidate who will become Yudhoyono’s running-mate in the upcoming presidential election, PKS handed Yudhono an ’empty envelope’,” PD’s legislative board chairman Hilmi Aminuddin said after the conclusion of the PKS meeting.
Aside from handing the empty envelope to yudhoyono, the PKS former president who is also the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR)’s chairman, Hidayat Nurwahid, the party’s current president Tifatul Sembiring and Salim Segaf Al Djufri, Indonesian ambassador to Saudi Arabia, have been mentioned as potential vice presidential hopefuls.
When asked to comment about Hidayat Nurwahid, Anas said “We will let Yudhoyono to decide”.
During the press conference, newsmen asked Anas about the relation between PD and Golkar party especially after the recent Golkar’s special leaders meeting, which nominated Jusuf Kalla, Golkar’s chairman, who is the incumbent vice president, as its presidential candidate.
“We have not yet closed our door to cooperate with Golkar party,” Anas responded.
